iDesignRES: Open-Source Tools for a Sustainable Energy Transition

Discover the latest updates from the European iDesignRES project and stay tuned for what’s coming next.

The iDesignRES Project

The iDesignRES project – Integrated Design of the Components of the Energy System to Plan the Uptake of Renewable Energy – aims to revolutionise energy planning by providing open-source tools to public authorities and grid operators.

The objective is to facilitate the adoption of low- and zero-emission renewable energy sources and to support the development of resilient infrastructures at local, national, and European levels.

Key Results

During its first year, iDesignRES achieved significant milestones across several key areas:

  • Project-Internal Scenario Explorer: an interactive platform developed to analyse energy transition scenarios, featuring simulations that assess different policies and their impacts.

  • Modular multi-physics models: designed to accurately represent the interactions between various components of the energy system.

  • Standardised open-source frameworks: created to ensure interoperability between tools and facilitate data access.

  • Pilot Case Studies: model testing began in Spain, showing promising results in terms of scalability and applicability in real-world contexts.

Next Steps

As the project enters its second year, it embarks on a critical phase. Key upcoming activities include:

  • Launch of pilot case studies in Lombardy: in 2025, testing of the open-source models will begin in Lombardy, with a planned duration of one year. Further details will be shared in the coming months.

  • Enhancement of visualisation and analysis platforms: to provide an even more effective and intuitive user experience.

  • Active involvement of policymakers and energy sector stakeholders: to maximise the real-world impact of project outcomes.

  • Collaborations with other European projects and energy modelling networks: to strengthen synergies, promote dialogue, and facilitate knowledge sharing.
