iDesignRES

It aims to provide open-source tools to public authorities and network operators for planning and optimising the adoption of low and zero emission energy sources, and for enhancing resilient infrastructures on a regional, national and European scale.

The project iDesignRES - Integrated Design of the Components of the Energy System to Plan the Uptake of Renewable Energy: an open-source toolbox - is a Research Innovation Action funded by the Call HEU-CL5-2022-D3-01-13 "Energy system modelling, optimisation and planning tools" of the HORIZON EUROPE programme.

The iDesignRES consortium consists of 22 partners from 11 countries: Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Norway, the Netherlands and Ukraine.

PROJECT GOAL

The main objective of iDesignRES is to provide public authorities and operators with a set of avant-garde open source tools aimed at efficiently planning and optimising the adoption of sustainable energy sources at local, national and European levels.

These tools include the following:

  • multi-physical energy models for components;
  • complete energy system modelling (with particular focus on the assembly of component models);
  • long-term planning of the multi-fuel grid;
  • optimisation of investments and operability.

 iDesignRES represents a breakthrough in the industry, adopting standards of openness, transparency and accessibility in the use of energy system models and their components.

The project is based on a pre-built database conforming to these standardised data formats.

To make the most of this modelling and data infrastructure, iDesignRES will develop an innovative and unique cloud-hub platform. This will enable direct online execution of any energy system model, simplifying software testing, version control and increasing computational performance through open licences, cloud services and supercomputing, making access easier even for average users.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed tools, iDesignRES identified five actual cases, including two cases of macro-regions (North Sea area and South-East Europe), two industrial clusters (Basque Country and Lombardy regions) and a case of expansion in Ukraine. The models and results of the scenarios are combined in the final visualisation tools of iDesignRES, designed to inform policy-makers and grid operators.

EXPECTED RESULTS

The final outcome will be a complete online system that will allow the public and relevant authorities to design a renewable energy system with ease, using a suite of easily accessible tools. These tools will be able to model at high space-time resolutions, represent details of the physics of the energy system and assemble models with a high degree of modularity.
