IDESIGNRES STAKEHOLDER WORKSHOP – LOMBARDY USE CASE

How will the Lombardy energy system change in the coming years? What infrastructure will be needed to support the growth of renewables, the electrification of energy consumption and the decarbonisation of industry? And what could be the main constraints for the electricity grid?

These questions will be at the heart of the Stakeholder Workshop of the European project iDesignRES – Lombardy Use Case, taking place on 28 October 2026, starting at 09:00, at Politecnico di Milano – EN:lab.

The event is organised as part of the activities of the Lombardy Use Case coordinated by LE2C and will provide an opportunity for direct discussion with local stakeholders: public authorities, network operators, businesses, the research community and other actors across the energy value chain.

The objective is twofold: on the one hand, to present the first results of the analyses developed for Lombardy; on the other, to assess together with stakeholders whether the scenarios, assumptions and energy models used realistically represent the planning, investment and transformation needs of the regional energy system.

KEY TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP

During the meeting, some of the main issues characterising Lombardy’s energy transition will be explored:

  • growth of renewable energy sources and adaptation of the electricity grid;
  • flexibility and energy storage needs;
  • decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial sectors;
  • new infrastructure for electrification, hydrogen and CCUS;
  • potential grid bottlenecks in scenarios of increased photovoltaic generation and growing electricity demand.

Particular attention will be paid to decarbonisation strategies for Lombardy’s industry, with a focus on transition pathways, available technologies and the infrastructure needed to support this transformation.

The workshop will also serve as a validation exercise: the discussion with stakeholders will make it possible to assess the consistency of the assumptions and results with the actual conditions of the territory, gather input on the data that is still needed and identify the priority scenarios to be further explored in the subsequent stages of the project.

Some of the digital tools developed by iDesignRES will also be presented, including CloudHub and Scenario Explorer, designed to support energy system analysis and make model results more accessible to those involved in decision-making in the public, infrastructure and industrial sectors.

The meeting will therefore represent an important step towards translating the project’s results into information that can support regional energy planning, bringing together modelling, industrial needs and territorial priorities.

THE IDESIGNRES PROJECT

iDesignRES – Integrated Design of the Components of the Energy System to Plan the Uptake of Renewable Energy: an open-source toolbox is a project funded by the Horizon Europe programme, which develops a range of open-source tools for modelling, planning and optimising energy systems, with the aim of supporting public authorities and network operators in decisions concerning the deployment of renewable energy sources, the development of energy infrastructure and the management of increasingly integrated and multi-vector systems.

iDesignRES brings together 22 partners from 11 countries and includes several territorial use cases to test the tools developed in real-world contexts. Lombardy is one of these, identified as an industrial use case to validate the models against the specific characteristics of the territory and the concrete needs of the regional energy transition.

LE2C’S ROLE IN THE LOMBARDY USE CASE

Within the project, LE2C coordinates the Lombardy Use Case, with the aim of connecting the models developed by the consortium with the actual needs of the territory.

In particular, LE2C works to:

  1. engage public and private stakeholders;
  2. incorporate real data, constraints and needs from Lombardy into the models;
  3. contribute to the definition and validation of regional scenarios;
  4. ensure that the results produced can be effectively used to support industrial, infrastructure and policy decisions.

The workshop on 28 October therefore represents a key stage in this process of stakeholder engagement and validation with the territory.
