SPACE-NEST in Val di Scalve: L’Eco di Bergamo highlights the project

The European SPACE-NEST mission has reached Val di Scalve. L’Eco di Bergamo has dedicated an article to the project and to the work carried out by LE2C and the Province of Bergamo on the regeneration of mountain villages.

The Social Economy Mission of the European project SPACE-NEST, which includes LE2C among its partners, arrived in Val di Scalve (Bergamo) to delve into the regeneration of mountain villages and abandoned buildings.

The activities carried out by the international team—composed of architects, urban planners and social economy experts from Italy, Spain and Slovenia—were reported by L’Eco di Bergamo, which dedicated an article to the visit and to the analysis and co-design work launched in the area.

The newspaper highlights how Val di Scalve is at the centre of a listening and co-creation process aimed at generating new ideas to counter depopulation, enhance the valley’s historical heritage and breathe new life into currently abandoned places.

The article also mentions the mapping activities carried out within the project by the Province of Bergamo and the University of Bergamo, which identified around thirty sites of interest—including the former school and Casa Bonaldi Grassi in Schilpario, the Casa sulla Roccia in Azzone, sections of the Via Mala and the Contrada De Signo.

The mission concluded with a workshop involving local administrations, cooperatives, associations and local stakeholders, with the goal of turning the on-site visits into concrete ideas to be developed in the coming months. READ THE DEDICATED NEWS STORY.

For LE2C, seeing the project and the work carried out in the area featured in L’Eco di Bergamo represents an important recognition and a further motivation to continue along the path of regeneration and social innovation that SPACE-NEST is promoting.

What is SPACE-NEST?

SPACE-NEST is a European project funded by the COSME programme that supports the regeneration of small villages and abandoned sites through:

- participatory processes with communities, local authorities and businesses;
- co-creation actions to identify new social, cultural and economic functions;
- the enhancement of natural and historical heritage;
- the development of project ideas to be submitted to regional, national and European funding calls.

The project involves partners from Italy, Spain and Slovenia and includes a series of territorial missions leading up to a final event in 2026.
