REC Supply Chain "Transition towards the Renewable Energy Communities Ecosystem"

The Lombardy supply chain on Renewable Energy Communities (REC), promoted by LE2C and coordinated by TerrAria Ltd., is committed to generating environmental, economic, and social benefits through the installation of renewable energy-powered systems, self-production, and energy sharing.

The project "Transition towards the renewable energy communities ecosystem" has been financed by the "Filiere & Ecosistemi 2023" call of the Lombardy Region. The initiative aims to promote and strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of production processes, services, and industrial ecosystems within its territory, fostering interconnection among businesses.

THE CONTEXT

The supply chain "Transition towards the renewable energy communities ecosystem" emerged within the LE2C "Smart Energy Systems" Competence Area and is coordinated by TerrAria Ltd.

The project's goal is to create a new paradigm for REC construction that opposes the current turnkey model, which generates limited environmental and social impacts in the involved territories. Through a bottom-up approach characterized by a plurality and differentiation of the involved entities, the supply chain strategy identifies different actors with specific vertical expertise for each task relevant to constructing the entire REC supply chain.

PROJECT

The project "Transition towards the renewable energy communities ecosystem" has been designed to support REC development through a series of activities divided into three consecutive phases. These activities will be accompanied by institutional and scientific marketing efforts focused on Renewable Energy Communities.

Compared to other entities entering the REC market, this supply chain brings the following main elements of innovation and competitiveness:

  • A bottom-up approach in REC construction, distinct from the current approach centralized around energy suppliers. The supply chain strategy identifies different actors with specific vertical expertise for each task relevant to constructing the entire REC supply chain.
  • Development of an innovative system management and optimization software that enables precise control over the entire process, simultaneously managing costs and incentives to be allocated to producers and consumers of the reference REC.

  • Strong inclination towards defining a specific REC model for each local reality, customized according to specific needs and potentials. The approach is characterized by the integration of the public administration and interested private sectors.

The ultimate objective of the project is to promote the dissemination of REC and raise public awareness about the importance of renewable sources for environmental and economic sustainability.

ENTITIES PARTICIPATING IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN

The REC supply chain, coordinated by TerrAria Ltd. (Innovative SME), consists of a total of 11 entities, including 9 companies , 1 consortium and 1 technological cluster.
